Congress: boiling the frog

What the hell are we thinking?

Over the years we’ve let congress chip away and chip away until our “representatives” in Washington have the best jobs they could ever imagine to have in the private sector — or anywhere else, for that matter. For example, members of congress currently have a minimum base annual salary of $174,000. About 3 times higher than the average private sector salary. Up to 239 days off per year. Cadillac health insurance, heavily subsidized by you and me, who else? An expense account of up to $3 million every year. Plus tons of other exclusive benefits, like free flying and airport parking, huge death benefit, very generous pension, and insider trading opportunities, especially after congress conveniently gutted the STOCK Act of 2012.

According to a detailed account by a very dedicated researcher (Clint Richardson), the cost of operating the U.S. Senate alone is well over $8 million per senator, for a total of well over $800 million, “with the understanding that this in no way represents all monies spent on the Senate or the money that each state pays separately for each Senator (employees, office leases, supplies, legal council, etc.), the taxpayers paid at least $815,257,003.33 for 2010.” Thank God we only have 100 senators. There are 435 members in the House. You can read the entire article here.

The Las Vegas Sun suggests that the total cost of running the House amounts to $1.26 billion in 2012, and the cost of the Senate in that same year was $931 million, so costs are evidently going up every year.

Are we crazy? What the hell are we thinking, letting these bozos get away with this kind of robbery? They get a year to come up with a budget and can’t even do that. They keep themselves separate from all of us unwashed in the laws they pass.

What a job. A salary of $175,000 a year (which is taxed), plus an expense account with basically no limitations of anywhere from $1.3 million to $4 million (which is not taxed). No wonder the overwhelmingly main goal of all these guys and gals is TO KEEP THAT FRIGGING JOB!
